A brief description of Tracking

Tracking is an excellent form of exercise for dogs. Most breeds are capable of doing it and as dogs love to use their noses, they usually love doing it. It is a very mentally challenging form of exercise, a 10 minute Track can be the equivalent to a 1 hour walk. It is always done on a long lead/line, so it works well if you lack confidence that your dog will stay with you off lead.

There are different types of Tracking depending on what Dog Sports you compete in, I teach IGP style Tracking. IGP Tracking also works if you want to compete in Working Trials or UK Tracking Dog.

In IGP tracking you walk a basic pattern on grass or dirt, without your dog, and on the way you drop Articles which have your scent on. You return to collect your dog and whilst holding your line, the dog follows the track you walked and indicates the dropped Articles. My dogs indicate by laying down and staring at the Articles.

The above is a basic explanation of a very exciting activity to do with your dog and the beauty of it is, dogs of all ages can do it, even those that are a little elderly.

You don't have to take it too seriously, you can just have a bit fun with your dog.

If you look at my Facebook page: 'Laura Pitcher - Dog Training' you will find videos of my dogs Tracking where you can get an idea of what it looks like.
